Friends Of The Voter Empowerment Collaborative (VEC) Sponsor Trip To Celebrate Selma To Montgomery March

By Special to the Daily World
Mark your calendars. All roads lead to Selma, Ala., to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march that took place on Sunday, March 7, 1965. Scholars agree that this march and the events on the Edmund Pettus Bridge (known as Bloody Sunday) led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Of course, this historic legislation removed barriers that resulted in the election of Black and minority elected officials.

Voter Empowerment Collaboration (VEC) is sponsoring a bus pilgrimage to Selma on Sunday, March 4, 2012, leaving from the Mall West End located at 850 Oak St., Atlanta, Ga. 30310 at 6 a.m. sharp and return at 9 p.m. The cost is $35 per seat and $7 per lunch — $42. You may bring your lunch if you choose. The payment deadline is Saturday, Feb 4, 2012. Mail checks or money orders to: Love In Action Ministries Inc. P.O. Box 312213, Atlanta, Ga. 31131. Rev. Je’an Ward is the Pilgrimage coordinator and can be reached at 770-572-3782. Please RSVP by replying to this email revaelove@yahoo.com.

The theme of the Pilgrimage is It’s a Family Affair. We are inviting families to participate. Husbands, wives, parents, mentors bring your children, grandchildren, mentees, and extended families.

Let’s lead by example. Several couples have committed to join Juanita and Albert Love,  including Rev. & Mrs. Greg Fann, Mr. & Mrs. Joe Carn, Rev. & Mrs. Je’an Ward, Rev. & Rev. Charles Mclean, Mr.& Mrs. Henry Culverson, Mr. & Mrs. Michael Farris, and several others.  Rep. Roberta Salaam, Councilman Joe Carn, and Councilwowan Elizebeth Hurst will lead a delegation of local elected officials. Dr. Richard Cobble and Rev. Fann will lead local clergy. “Let’s pass on our knowledge and experiences and prepare our youth to receive the torch of leadership for the future,” said Love.

If you are unable to go, consider sponsoring others, especially youth. Clergy members may sponsor four youth and a chaperon or more to represent your church, Mosque, Temple, or Synagogue. A follow-up meeting/rally to share lessons learned will be held.   Call 404-788-4542 for more information.
