Falcons’ Smith Checked For ‘Non-Emergency Matter’

By Associated Press
Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith returned to Atlanta early Monday morning (Dec. 12) after being examined in a Charlotte hospital overnight, following the Falcons win over the Panthers.

The Falcons said in a statement that Smith was examined for a “non-emergency matter” but did not release details.

Smith became ill and walked off the team plane prior to its return trip back to Atlanta after the Falcons’ defeated Carolina 31-23 in a come-from-behind win on Dec. 11.

Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff told Peter King of Sports Illustrated and NBC that Smith did not have a heart attack. Falcons spokesman Reggie Roberts would not confirm Smith was examined for chest discomfort.

“Coach Smith is resting comfortably, his tests reaffirmed his health, and he is expected to be in Atlanta on Monday,” the Falcons said in a statement released Sunday night.
