Jesse Jackson, Harry Belafonte & Don Newcombe Presenters Of 2011 MLB Beacon Awards, May 14

Civil Rights Leader Rev. Jesse Jackson; entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte; and Former All-Star pitcher, MVP and Cy Young Award winner Don Newcombe will serve as presenters of the 2011 MLB Beacon Awards at the MLB Beacon Awards Banquet presented by Belk on Saturday, May 14.

They will also participate in the Delta Civil Rights Game pregame ceremony at Turner Field recognizing the MLB Beacon Award winners.

Jackson  will present the Beacon of Life Award to Baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Banks. Belafonte  will present the Beacon of Change Award to Grammy Award winner Carlos Santana. Newcombe will present the Beacon of Hope Award to Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman.

The banquet, which will take place at the Omni Hotel Grand Ballroom in downtown Atlanta, is one of the events surrounding the Delta Civil Rights Game. It celebrates the achievements of individuals whose lives are emblematic of the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement. American Civil Rights Movement Leader and co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Rev. Joseph Lowery will deliver the keynote speech, and Baseball Hall of Famer and Braves legend Hank Aaron also will be honored at the event.

The banquet is one of many festivities scheduled to occur in the days leading up to the 2011 Delta Civil Rights Game between the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, May 15 at Turner Field. The game and its ancillary events have been developed by MLB and the Braves to recognize all those who fought on and off the field for equal rights for all Americans.
